Operating principles of contact lens care solution
Disinfectants
The safety of contact lens use depends on their cleanliness. Every microorganism that enters the eye poses a risk of infectious diseases. Therefore, effective disinfection of contact lenses is the basis for safe contact lens use. Diviniti OceanFresh combines two safe disinfectants: Polyhexamethylene Biguanide and Polyquaternium. Polyhexamethylene Biguanide (PHMBG), which is used in Diviniti OceanFresh solution, is a specially improved derivative of the world-famous PHMB preservative. Although PHMB class preservatives have historically been known for their ability to quickly kill both bacteria, fungi and other dangerous microorganisms, their problem was their low molecular weight, due to which this preservative tended to be absorbed into the contact lens material and continue to be released from the lens for an even longer period of time after the contact lens was placed on the eye. However, such a disinfectant effect is not desirable for the human eye. The specially developed disinfectant PHMBG from the Italian laboratory, used in the Diviniti OceanFresh solution, has a specially increased molecular weight, which prevents the disinfectant from accumulating in the contact lens, so the eye is not irritated after wearing contact lenses. At the same time, this disinfectant effectively destroys all types of pathogens, as it is able to destroy the bacterial cell walls and stop the division of bacteria. The second disinfectant in the solution is Polyquaternium. It also does not absorb into contact lenses and is added to further improve the ability to destroy fungi in the container and on the surface of the lenses. Polyquaternium acts directly on the fungal cell wall and prevents their growth and development.Surfactants and Stabilizers
The cleaning effect of Diviniti OceanMoist solution is provided by the surfactant Pluronic F127 in combination with a citrate buffer system. Pluronic F127 is a biocompatible surfactant, which means that it does not affect the cells of the human eye, but acts like soap on the surface of contact lenses. Since it effectively removes both protein and lipid deposits, the solution can be used equally well for cleaning old-generation hydrogel contact lenses, as well as for maintaining the cleanliness of modern silicone hydrogel contact lenses. This is important because during the day, substances contained in tears and mucus from the surface of the eye are attracted to the surface of the lens, which quickly begin to deteriorate and create an allergic environment. Pluronic F127 stops this reaction by separating irritating foreign molecules from the contact lens and when the lenses are rinsed, all deposits are washed away, allowing a completely clean contact lens to be inserted into the eye. The citrate buffer system performs a dual function: the buffer system stabilizes the pH level of the solution, regardless of the influence of ambient temperature or other conditions. Diviniti OceanFresh contact lens care solution retains its properties and does not sting the eyes. However, citrate also electrostatically attracts dirt molecules, thereby facilitating the cleaning of the contact lens surface. At the same time, the citrate buffer system is the most friendly solution stabilization method for sensitive corneal cells, which is why Diviniti OceanFresh is recommended for sensitive eyes.Humidifiers
Diviniti OceanFresh’s greatest pride is two naturally occurring humectants: sodium hyaluronate and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose. Both of these substances are popular in cosmetology and the eye moisturizer sector. Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) is a plant-based viscoelastic polysaccharide with thermogelling properties. This means that in the solution bottle this substance is liquid, but when heated to human body temperature, it thickens slightly, creating a smooth gel layer that reduces the friction of the contact lens against the surface of the eye and improves the gliding of the eyelids over the contact lens during blinking. Sodium hyaluronate is a derivative of hyaluronic acid, which is widely used in the treatment of conjunctivitis, wounds and ulcers. This substance is naturally found in eye tissues, skin and joint fluid and acts as a lubricant. Due to its lower molecular weight, sodium hyaluronate acts on deeper cell layers, promoting full regeneration of the eye surface, while HPMC covers the needs of the upper layer of the eye. The combination of these two moisturizers guarantees- water absorption, thereby thickening the tear film and maintaining the moisture level in the eye throughout the day,
- Stabilization of the natural mucous (mucin) layer of the eye surface for more comfortable contact lens contact with the eye surface,
- “Pillow effect” on contact lenses, as all problem areas or the driest spots on the contact lens surface are covered with a layer of moisturizers, preventing discomfort,
- Forms a viscoelastic matrix on the eye surface, protecting the eye against dryness and desiccation even in challenging conditions, such as prolonged computer work.
